4 Trapezoids The bases of a trapezoid are the parallel sides The legs are the non-parallel sides The height is the perpendicular distance between the two parallel bases. base (b 1 ) Base (b 2 ) leg height (h)

5 Theorem 5-8: Area of a Trapezoid The area of a trapezoid is half the product of the height and the sum of the lengths of the bases. A = ½ h(b 1 + b 2 )

6 Example 1 Find the area of a trapezoid with the height of 7 cm, and bases of 12 cm and 15 cm.

8 Real World Example Approximate the area of Arkansas by finding the area of the trapezoid shown.
