8 UIDE Chapter 25 Working with Quantitative Data Standard Deviation –One standard deviation away from the mean in either direction on the horizontal axis (the red area on the above graph) accounts for somewhere around 68 percent of the data in this group. Two standard deviations away from the mean (the red and green areas) account for roughly 95 percent of the data. 9 UIDE Chapter 25 Working with Quantitative Data Coefficient of Variation –A measure of variability (or dispersion) of a distribution that is equal to the standard deviation expressed as a percentage of the mean standard deviation / mean x 100% –Used to measure the imprecision in survey estimates introduced by sampling. A coefficient of variation of 1 percent would indicate that an estimate could vary slightly due to sampling error, while a coefficient of variation of 50 percent means that the estimate is very imprecise
