INSOMNIA Insomnia = lack of sleep Onset Insomnia -have trouble falling asleep Termination Insomnia -awake early and cannot get back to sleep Maintenance Insomnia -awaken frequently during the night, but can’t get back to sleep every time

SLEEP APNEA Apnea = no breathing People with apnea may fail to breathe for 1 min or more & then awake gasping for air. More common in obese & elderly people. Many elderly people die of sleep apnea.

NARCOLEPSY Narcolepsy = condition in which people fall asleep or at least feel very sleepy, often suddenly, in the middle of the day. Sudden attack of muscle weakness (esp. after period of anger, excitement, etc…) Show less arousal than other people do during the day.

SLEEP TALKING Sleep Talking = Talking during sleep, without being aware of it Can involve complicated dialogues or mumbling Most common & least troublesome sleep disorder Occurs with equal probability as REM sleep

SLEEP WALKING Sleep Walking-behaviour disorder that results in walking or performing other complex behaviours while asleep. More likely to occur if a person is sleep deprived Normally runs in families More common in children than adults
