CHAPTER 4 CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION #6 By Delaney Whitman
2
TYRANNY Tyranny: cruel and oppressive government or rule. Aka: Cuba or China.
3
OLIGARCHY Oligarchy: A small group of people having control over a country or organization. OR Oligarchy: rule of the few; generally these few are the people who are richer and more powerful than the others. Generally based on how wealthy you were. You had to be educated in power. Aka: England.
4
DEMOCRACY Democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. Aka: America.
5
QUESTION: HOW DID BOTH OLIGARCHY AND DEMOCRACY DEVELOP FROM A REJECTION OF TYRANNY? Answer: Oligarchy and democracy were both derived by rejecting a tyranny because the tyrants were elite citizens that wanted to take over; because they were elite, it meant that had a forceful hand in creating or destroying laws. If they wanted a tyranny, they would have a tyranny. However, other citizens didn’t approve of these elite citizens taking over. So, the people rebelled against the looming tyranny. Other members of the upper class rejected the tyranny by forming the oligarchy; other free men rejected the tyranny by creating a democracy.
