Acts 5:12-42 THE MAKING OF AN ETERNAL MOVEMENT
2
Pastor 12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.
3
Congregation 17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 20 "Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people the full message of this new life." 21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.
4
Pastor When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported, 23 "We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside." 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.
5
Congregation 25 Then someone came and said, "Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people." 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them. 27 Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name," he said. "Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood."
6
Pastor 29 Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than men! 30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead— whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
7
Congregation 33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed them: "Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing.
8
Pastor 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

Congregation 40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. What was happening? The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. All the believers met together in Solomon's Colonnade. Christians were highly regarded by the people. More and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. People brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds came from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.
11
What was happening? The high priest and his associates were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. They were released by an angel of the Lord during the night and told them to go back and preach in the temple courts, which they did. The captain of the temple and chief priests were puzzled when they heard about that. They arrested the apostles again and commanded them not to preach in the name of Jesus
12
What was happening? The apostles chose to obey God rather than men and witnessed about Jesus’ resurrection. The chief priests were furious and wanted to put the apostles to death. Gamaliel gave a wise advice to the chief priests. And the apostles were dismissed.
13
What was the advice? Gamaliel gave them a report on the Movements that had happened recently in their country. He mentioned 3 Movements: 1.The THEUDAS Movement 2.The JUDAS OF GALILEE Movement 3.The JESUS Movement He compared the 3 Movements He presented a key to evaluate if a Movement comes from God or not.
14
THE FIRST MOVEMENT LEADER: THEUDAS He had 400 followers Then he was killed His disciples went their different ways The Movement became NOTHING
15
WHO WAS THEUDAS? A false prophet and a revolutionary who led a rebellion in Judea. With a mass of followers (put at 400 in Acts 5:36) He was the leader of an unsuccessful insurrection against Rome He went to the Jordan River which he said would part at his command The Roman procurator sent troops who killed or captured the followers and took him to Jerusalem where he was beheaded
16
THE SECOND MOVEMENT LEADER: JUDAS OF GALILEE He had followers Then he was killed His followers were scattered The Movement ENDED
17
WHO WAS JUDAS OF GALILEE? Judas of Galilee (AD 6), a leader of the Zealots, a radical revolutionary Jewish sect. He raised an insurrection against the taxation census of Cyrenius (AD 6) on the grounds that no one but God was Israel's master, and he was killed.
18
WHO WAS JUDAS OF GALILEE? Leader of a popular revolt against the Romans at the time when the first census was taken in Judea, In the year when Quirinus came into Judea to take an account of the Jews, Judas, together with Zadok, a Pharisee, headed a large number of Zealots and offered strenuous resistance. He took possession of the arsenal of Sepphoris, armed his followers, who were in great numbers, and soon became the terror of the Romans.
19
WHO WAS JUDAS OF GALILEE? Judas proclaimed the Jewish state as a republic recognizing God alone as king and ruler and His laws as supreme. The revolt grew, and in some places serious conflicts ensued. He was eventually killed. Two of his sons, Jacob and Simon, were crucified by Tiberius Alexander; another son, Menahem, became the leader of the Sicarii and for a time had much power; he was finally slain by the high- priestly party (B. J.)
20
THE WISDOM OF GAMALIEL His advice: “Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."
21
THE WISDOM OF GAMALIEL A Man-Made Movement: – It will fail – It is temporary and it will stop after the death of the leader – The disciples will disperse to their own ways – The Movement will end
22
THE WISDOM OF GAMALIEL A God-Made Movement: – It will not fail – It is unstoppable – It is eternal – The disciples will gather and reproduce – The Movement will explode
23
THE THIRD MOVEMENT LEADER: JESUS CHRIST He had 120 followers He was killed He was raised from the dead His disciples gathered and multiplied The Movement EXPLODED throughout the world Jesus called it “ecclesia”= church
24
THE JESUS’ MOVEMENT WAS GOD-MADE
25
Disciples gathered and multiplied
26
The Movement EXPLODED
27
WHAT DID MAKE IT LAST?

THE FIRST ACCOUNT the apostles' teaching the fellowshipthe breaking of bread prayer 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courtsThey broke bread in their homes and ate together 47 praising God And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-47)
29
THE SECOND ACCOUNT 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. they shared everything they had the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus 34 There were no needy persons among them. 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need. 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

THE MAKING OF A CHURCH It’s a simple living movement which will never die Its a powerful association because of the presence of the Holy Spirit, which happens when some elements are in place: worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, It requires dedication and obedience of the apostles and disciples in witnessing about Jesus
38
Ephesians 2:19-22 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
