- It is sometimes cheaper to borrow a book than to buy it - ILL is a great way for the acquisitions department to analyze your collection - Libraries can quickly get crowded and ILL makes weeding more palatable No library can own everything but with ILL’s help it might seem like you can.

- According to a 2004 study of ARL libraries by Mary Jackson, each transaction costs a total of$26.77- this amount may be more or less for others and may only apply to those in her study, but it’s one finding among others - Maxcost line- don’t forget to use it - IFM reduces processing costs - Some stores appear on OCLC as lenders- know who you are ordering from- ALBRS, QUICK, BWBKS

Borrowing Excellent personal service to your own patrons - help patrons choose material to request when appropriate - be honest about timeframes Lending - try to loan “non-standard returnables” - speed is your friend - if you can, stay open around Christmas

UPS or FEDex or any express shipping company Both sending AND returning VIVA subsidy of delivery costs If you absolutely cannot use UPS or FEDex, use first class mail

$315,000 for public colleges $131,285 for private colleges Reimbursement based on total originals loaned to VIVA members in previous fiscal year as reported by OCLC. Money is to be a partial reimbursement for expense of sending loans and returning borrowed items by expedited mail. Each school can choose its own delivery service.
