1. College & Career Planning 12 th Grade Advisory September 16, 2015

2. Reminders! Post HS Night is September 23 rd at 6:30 in the library. Bring your family! SHS College Fair is Thursday, October 22 at 6:30 in the field house. – Cambridge Rindge and Latin college fair is Wednesday October 7 th at 6pm and you are invited! 3. 12 th Grade Advisory Most of the Advisory periods this fall will be dedicated to you completing the tasks you need to do for college & career planning. You will spend three periods in the computer labs. How you spend your time is up to you! There is a lot of work to be done and you could get A LOT of it done in Advisory. Use your time wisely.

4. College Tasks Use your Guide to the College Process to help you figure out what you should be doing and how. Page 3 has the Suggested Timeline of tasks. At this point, you should have: – Created a list of prospective colleges – Completed a Counselor Brag Sheet on Naviance – Taken SATs, ACTs, and maybe Subject Tests or signed up to take them this fall. – Asked two academic teachers for a recommendation

5. Counselor Brag Sheet EVERYONE should complete this – regardless of whether you plan to go to college, work, military, etc. – Sign in to Naviance using X2 username and password (connection.naviance.com/somervillehigh or choose it from the Favorites list on SHS computers) – Click on About Me – Click on Counselor Brag Sheet

6. Prospective College List You should already have worked on this prospective list. At this point, you should be deciding which schools you definitely want to apply to. Once you are sure that you want to apply to a school, add it to your final college list. This list is called “Colleges I’m Applying to” on Naviance. Refer to pages 6 & 7 of your guide for more information.

7. Teacher Recommendations Refer to page 13 of your guide for detailed information. You must: – Complete the Teacher Brag Sheet on Naviance – Ask your teachers in person – Request the teacher recommendation on Naviance (see the next slide for instructions). – Complete yellow teacher rec request form when your list is complete – not now!

8. Requesting Teacher Recs on Naviance Sign in to Naviance Click on “Colleges” Click on “Colleges I’m Applying To” Scroll down to Teacher Recommendations. Click “Add/Request.” Choose your teacher from the list. Write a note if you’d like. Click “Update Requests”

9. Tasks to Complete Today Counselor Brag Sheet Teacher Recommendation Brag Sheet College List – Work on your prospective list – Complete research on colleges to add – Work on final list Create a Common App Account Work on your Common App (see page 10 of your guide) Match your Common App with Naviance (see page 11 of your guide)

10. Career Related Tasks to Complete If you want to work on something not related to college, you can complete the following: – Counselor Brag Sheet – Cluster Finder Survey (found on the Career tab of Naviance) – Career Interest Survey (found on the Career tab of Naviance) – Create a resume on Naviance (found on the Career tab of Naviance)
