Democratic Education By: Mary Craig

Part 1: Democratic Education is the idea that students get to make choices in school. Description of the picture to the right: These fourth graders had a choice of three topics to write about in their class Haiku. They had to put their heads on their desks and raise their hand when they heard the topic choice they wanted to write about. The teacher tallied the number of hands for each topic and the topic with the most votes was the topic in which the class was going to write a class Haiku. Caption: The picture to the right depicts fourth grade students choosing what topic they would like to write about in their class Haiku.

Part 2: The next three pictures were shown to my class. As a class, the students identified what they were doing in each picture and decided on an appropriate caption for each picture.
