Lesson Objectives: To know the reasons for large -scale deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. To describe and explain the consequences of deforestation. To create a detailed case study of deforestation in the Amazon basin.
5
What is Deforestation? 2 marks Deforestation is the cutting down or burning of trees in forest areas (1) on a large scale (1)
9
The Amazon Rainforest Where is the Amazon?
10
Deforestation in the Amazon Deforestation in the Amazon has been going on for centuries. The local Indians used “Slash and Burn” to clear small parts of the forest to grow crops on. Since the area cleared was small, the damage was minimal and the jungle eventually took over the land once again. This damage was sustainable because it was very few people, clearing very small patches of the rainforest.

Slash and Burn in the Amazon
12
But today... Deforestation is now carried out at a much greater scale, and it is no longer sustainable because the forest is not given time to recover.
13
By 2001, 13 percent of the Amazon was gone, a total of 800,000 sq km(nearly 500,000 square miles). It is estimated that by 2050, a total of 47 percent of the forest will be lost.

Why is the Amazon being chopped down? v A B C D
16
Why protect?????CO2 Carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels is taken in by trees This helps to reduce carbon in the atmosphere, reducing global warming

And……
18
So….. Let’s find out more! You must produce a case study on the nature of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. Use the text book and the resources provided to construct a detailed account of this. Cut and stick the resources from this sheet to support your case study. You must include: A description of the location of the Amazon rainforest. Why is the Amazon rainforest globally ecologically important? For what reasons is deforestation occurring in the Amazon? What are the consequences of deforestation in the Amazon? This could be the case study for a 9 mark examination question so ensure your answer is well detailed and uses key geographical terminology.

Homework What are your views on deforestation? Write 250 words to explain your views. You should use evidence to support and justify your ideas.
