5 What are SATs?  Statutory assessment tests  A legal requirement  All 11 year olds in England sit the tests  They now measure a child’s attainment in English (including SPAG) and Mathematics at the end of key stage 2.

6 Why are SATs important?  Like any other formal examination process.  Give you information about where your child is (academically).  Gives you a comparison to see how much they have progressed throughout their time at Childer Thornton  Informs secondary schools of academic ability and this information is used for target setting.

7 New Curriculum  The children are the first cohort to be working towards the new national curriculum.  The current Year 6 will be the first to be tested under the new framework.  Levels have been replaced with a scaled score.  There has been no guidance on what score a child needs obtain to achieve the national standard.

8 Scaled scores  Children develop at different levels but at the end of Year 6 the expected level is a scaled score of 100.  REMEMBER – ALL children are different. School’s aim is to make sure all children achieve appropriate progress from the end of KS1.

9 What will be tested? Maths 1.Paper 1 - Arithmetic (30 minutes)* 2.Paper 2 – Reasoning (40 minutes) 3.Paper 3 – Reasoning (40 minutes) * Paper 1 has replaced the mental mathematics paper English Reading – 1 hour to read and answer questions based around 3-4 different texts Spelling Punctuation and Grammar 1.Paper 1 – Questions (45 minutes) 2.Paper 2 – Spelling test – 20 spellings. Writing – No longer a ‘one off’ test within the SATs week. This is continuously assessed throughout the year.

10 Maths o This test has three papers: o Paper 1 – Arithmetic- 30 minutes (36 questions – 40 marks) o These questions aim to test the child’s ability in arithmetic. This is a written test but they are required to use both mental and written skills.  Questions types include  adding and subtracting  Complex calculations including with fractions  Long division and multiplication Paper 2 and 3 Reasoning – 40 minutes ( 35 marks) (previously Paper B allowed the use of a calculator) Mental Arithmetic – 5, 10 or 15 seconds per question (20%) Some of the questions require the children to show their processing skills Many of the questions require the children to show their skill in mathematical reasoning in a variety of situations

11 Can we read to the children?  If a child requests it, we can read words and numbers out to them.  We are not allowed to read mathematical symbols.  For example  Q. What does ‘>’ or ‘<‘ mean?  A. I can’t tell you, but think hard and try to remember. We can talk about it after the test.  Q. What is ‘0.6’?  A. That’s nought point six.

19 The aspects of reading to be assessed  Give /explain the meaning of words in context.  Retrieve and record information / identify key details from fiction and non-fiction.  Summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph.  Make inferences from the text / explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text.  Predict what might happen from details stated and implied.  Identify / explain how information / narrative content is related and contributes to meaning as a whole.  Identify / explain how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases.  Make comparisons within the text.

34 What will School do to Help?  Booster groups -Writing – -Maths – -Reading -  Revision has started - children will receive normal teaching but with more opportunities to answer past questions, additional mental maths lesson and reading comprehension.

35 Homework  We will be giving out a past paper each week, which will be English or Maths  Children will be given a task on spag.com  Regular spellings will be sent home to learn.
