2 Phrasal verbs Study the rules about phrasal verbs When a phrasal verb has an object we can put the preposition before the object or after it. EXAMPLE Put down your pen or Put your pen down. When the object is a pronoun, the preposition must go after it. EXAMPLE She stopped reading the book and put it down. NOT: She stopped reading the book and put down it * Some verbs the meaning is clear from the meanings of the two parts EXAMPLE The cat climbed up the tree * Some verbs we can’t tell the meaning from the meanings of the two parts. EXAMPLE She looked after the children
