Meiosis The “naughty” one
2
Video: Why reproduce? To make more offspring -> Which contributes to the population -> Which continues the to the species as a whole.
3
How do animals reproduce? Sexual Reproduction ▫Two parents have offspring genetically different from both parents Asexual Reproduction ▫One parent has offspring genetically identical to itself.
4
So does it reproduce asexually or sexually?
5
Asexually or sexually?
12
What did we learn? Is reproduction as straight forward as you thought? Why do you think organisms use both sexual and asexual reproduction? BIG IDEA: Organisms are not necessarily sexual or asexual, some can use both methods.
13
Asexual Reproduction Advantages Rapid population No mates required No parental investment No diversity ▫Means cannot adapt and could lead to extinction Asexual Reproduction Disadvantages
14
Asexual Reproduction: Binary Fission Organism splits in two genetically identical organisms. Many single celled organisms use this more of reproduction. All bacteria go reproduce by binary fission. Some single celled eukaryotes go through mitosis (Protists, Fungi)
15
Asexual Reproduction: Budding Outgrowth on a part of a cell or body leads to two individuals.
16
Asexual Reproduction: Fragmentation If a part is broken off, each piece can generate a new organism
17
Sexual Reproduction Disadvantages: Variation! Adaptation Evolve at a fast rate Requires two parents Time and Energy Sexual Reproduction Advantages:
18
Sexual Reproduction: External Fertilization Both sperm and eggs (gametes) are released into the water. The sperm reaches the eggs and fertilization can take place forming zygote (offspring)
19
Sexual Reproduction: Internal Fertilization Fertilized eggs are laid outside of the female’s body and develop there.
20
Sexual Reproduction: Internal Fertilization Offspring develop inside the female and receive nourishment directly from the mother. The offspring are born alive
21
Why Sex? Pay attention to Hank Green’s videoHank Green’s video Write down 2 facts we did NOT just cover.
22
SUCCESS! What is your definition of success? Think about one or two sentences that define what success means to you. You are going to create a motivational poster about SUCCESS.
23
SUCCESS! Go to the Wiki and click on AutomotivatorAutomotivator You can choose the images available You can also open an image from the web. OR you can upload your own image Add your text. Upload to the Google Doc on the Wiki.Google Doc ▫Pick ONE line UNDER your class. Put your name and your image. ▫DO NOT TOUCH ANYONE ELSE’S POSTER!
24
Switching Gears Time for a genetics pre-test! When you are done, continue to work on Success poster, or start on your vocab list for tomorrow.
