2 Cellular Respiration Lab Important: Use the same person for all 3 trials Make sure you are ready to do the trial before doing you exercise Blow at a light, steady pace. The object is not to blow as many bubbles as fast as possible Cleanup: dispose all BTB (blue liquid) into the bins, not the sink! –Rinse you flask and graduated cylinder out with water and return to your station

4 Fermentation Also used by living things to make energy! More primitive than Cellular Resp. –Makes less ATP (energy) :( 2 types: 1. Alcohol Fermentation glucose → 4 ATP + alcohol + CO 2 Bacteria and yeast make energy this way Yeast make beer, wine, bread

5 2. Lactic Acid Fermentation glucose → 4 ATP + lactic acid + CO 2 Used by plant & animal cells if O 2 is low Used by muscle cells during strenuous exercise Lactic acid is “the burn” –makes muscles sore the next day

6 Why do you die without O 2 ? –Brain cells can’t live on 4 ATP from Fermentation

7 2 types of exercises: –Aerobic exercise: O 2 level high muscles can use Cell. Resp. best for weight loss

8 –Anaerobic exercise: O 2 level low muscles must use Fermentation for body building & stamina
