2 What is Culture? - The way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs/customs. 8 Traits: Social Groups, language, religion, daily life, history, arts, government, and economy.

3 Social Groups Rich, poor, middle class Young/old Men/Women
Ethnic Groups: groups of people who share a common culture, language, or history.

4 Language People use language to share information
Dialect: a local form of language. ex. Southern US

5 Religion 5 Major World Religions: Buddhism Christianity Hinduism Islam Judaism

6 Daily life/History Foods people eat/how they eat it.
Clothing and Homes also reflect culture. History: shapes how cultures view the world. Influences how a culture sees itself.

7 Government Monarchy: kings and queens Dictator: Takes control of govt. and rules as they wish. Democracy: rule by the people. - Governments can be mixed. Ex Great Britain

8 Economy How people make a living
- economic system sets rules for how an economy runs. Traditional Economy: based on customs/beliefs. Ex fishermen Market Economy: free enterprise, people make decisions. Command Economy: Govt makes decisions

9 Cultural Change Cultural Diffusion: spreading new knowledge and skills to other cultures. Early People – nomadic (moved place to place to find food.) Agricultural Revolution: occurred 10,000 yrs ago. - allowed people to be stationary

10 Cont. Civilizations: developed near rivers in Iraq, Egypt, India, and China. Industrial Revolution:1700 – 1800s - let to longer, more comfortable lives. Information Revolution: Now – World is connected.

11 Cultural Regions Cultural Regions: groups of countries that have common traits. - econ. Systems - Govt. - social groups - languages
