Personal Presentation Working Groups Internet Site Project IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005

Started at DG Environment, unit G4, from 1 st of February Seconded national expert on integrated product policy; Swedish Environmental Protection Agency Been working for 5 years on IPP: –environmental managem systems –design for the environment –research –within the Nordic Council of Ministers –with the Informal European IPP Network Engineering background in product development and a M.Sc in environmental management policy

Work experience as an EMS auditor, ecodesign and local environmental inspector, mechanical consultant Work task at the COM (based on the IPP Communication from 2003): –the two working groups within the IPP Regular Meetings; –identifying products with the greatest potential for environmental improvement; –on the LCA related projects connected to JRC in Ispra; –product guidelines –environmental declarations (EPDs) Personal objectives: to contribute to the success of IPP to contribute to a successful cooperation between the COM and the MS without excluding any other stakeholder IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005

IPP Working Groups The second IPP Regular Meeting in September 2004 agreed to set up two IPP working groups on: –product information needs –reporting Their aim is to discuss and find solutions to specific subjects important to the development of IPP with the participation of relevant experts. The working groups have clear objectives, mandates and they are organised for a limited period of time IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005

Working group on product information needs This working group will examine: –what life cycle information is needed by which stakeholder throughout the product chain; –which tools exists to fulfil these needs and where are the gaps; –how these gaps can be filled and the demand for environmental information about products increased; Ten experts from government and industry and NGO has been selected. Bob Ryder will chair. COM will host the secreteriat. Project duration is 12 months. Approx. 4-5 meetings IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005

Working group on reporting Submit a report to the Parliament and the Council in 2007 The reporting formats will create the basis for the Commission report on the progress The IPP Regular meeting agreed on a WG on reporting formats COM received only two applications to participacte Letter was sent to the IPP Regular Meeting representatives COM in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre EEA has allocated resources and will contribute to the work IPP Pilot Project on a Teak Garden Chair

WG Reporting COM, EEA and the Reginal Environmental Agency COM will chair the working group and will host the secreteriat The duration of the project is 15 months. Approximately 4-5 meeting will be needed. Tentative list of activities: –review the types of information that could usefully be reported; –examine theri relative availability in Member States and stakeholder; –draw up a suggested list for information to be reported; –devise a format for reporting. Internet site on life-cycle assessments tools and services and life cycle inventory data in support of European IPP – PE Europe Objectives: to improve availability and accessibility of selected life-cycle instruments with appropriate quality on the European scale in support of IPP The contract will comprise two main tasks that are thematically related to each other but can be carried out contemporaneously: –to establish a directory of life-cycle assessment tools and service providers that can support the wider up-take of life- cycle thinking –to collect life-cycle inventory data for a European LCI database IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005

Task 1 Web-pages that can be integrated into the EUROPA web-site Facilitate the access to existing information such as LCA databases, LCA tools and LCA services Particularly suitable for smaller companies and business Useful for other stakeholders, for example public administrations and for larger companies intending to assist suppliers and customers IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005

Task 2 Life-cycle inventory data from the following sectors: electricity production transports fuel production packaging materials engineering / construction materials production of chemical products Transfer the inventory electronic format suitable for incorporating the data in the European database Workshop in September 2005 in the framework of the study. Deliver the results by the end of this year. The results will be fed into the LCA/LCI handbook project IPP Regular Meeting - 2 March 2005
