The Effects of Sound Before TV, when radio was the only mass-market media entertainment, sound effects were added to live drama programs to enhance them. The sound effects were minimal and usually inserted for humor or suspense. Music and commercials were performed live as well. 2

Jack Foley As a multi-talented man working in silent movies, Jack Foley was the first to add sound effects to a movie. He did it ‘live’ while the music was being recorded and as the film played. The film (from 1929) was called “Showboat”. 3

Foley is a sound effect technique for synchronous or live sound effects. A Foley sound stage includes: Lots of props to make lots of different sounds Floor mic’d to hear footsteps Room mic’d for other sounds Foley artist(s) Sound recording engineer 4

Step for Step, Hit for Hit Foley Artists actually mimic the actor by physically walking and doing what they do in order to record sounds. Sound substitution Punching a cabbage = punching a person Sizzling bacon = rainstorm Breaking celery = breaking a bone 5

More control of the effects for Sound Engineers to fill in space around empty dialogue Music adds emotion through sound. Foley provides realism and quality to the production through sound effects. 6

Step Into Their Shoes Foley Artist (Project Requirements): Pick a 30-sec movie scene. Scene should have only 1 actor. Analyze it for sound effects. Create a list of sound effects. Gather props to recreate effects. Step into the actor’s shoes and perform your list of Foley effects live for the class while the scene plays on screen. Ideas for sounds - footsteps, clothes rustling, paper folding, furniture moving, doors opening and slamming, glass breaking 7
