Flight Plan: Opening Titles Analysis Tas Thomas

Location Ordinary setting, that the audience will have been in more than once in there life. Isolation, manmade, robotic, too slick, too clean. This reinstates to the audience the lack of people in this shot. Completely alone, unsupported, unstable time of life. The lighting in this setting is very stark and unforgiving. Being left behind – lack of information. Time is not running in a linear way. Cold place, slow pace. Reinstates the starkness.

Lighting and colour Stark, clinical, bright and not inviting or calming. Can’t escape cold. The light is cold and unforgiving. Time of hope/happiness. So the lighting has turned to a sick yellow. To tell the audience that this isn’t quite the truth. A bright flash of white light is used as a transition to show uncertainty The turquoise filter that is placed over this shot is used to show that society is sick

Costume and appearance of characters The fact that the main character is wearing a silk scarf show the audience that she has enough money to buy that so she is not poor. But the fact that she is wearing all black tells us that she might be in mourning. He scarf shifts to the side and she does not take notice of her appearance at this point in time. She is carrying a wet umbrella so she must have travelled by public transport, not in a car. Sound of dripping creates atmosphere Shows authority, medical background and that they have the importance in this setting. Black formal coat, done up. Black leather gloves. Simple but makes him stand out from the setting but almost makes him seem sinister and mysterious.

Props Ordinary every day object, that you could see anywhere so this emphasises that she is a normal person. The casket shows that significant event has occurred at but the fact that the casket in on a lift means that all the warmth that was there has gone because it makes it seem like a clinical process rather than a sad time and a time of loss. Ordinary object, weather is bad, lack of visibility so the character cannot fully know of her wear about at all times. The casket shows that she’s facing huge change, and grief.

Actors’ performance The main character is scared and frightened. And the fact that she is the only character in shot shows that she is alone. In this shot grief and sadness have taken over her face. This clearly shows that she is sad or distraught by something even thought she is not crying. The fact that she is trying to hid her feelings and show that the situation is not affecting her tells us that she is a strong person and that she does not want to be perceived as weak. She is relieved to see her husband but there is also a hint of confusion to her facial expression

Images that give clues to narrative/characterisation to come Dripping water from umbrella Whining sound of tube train, pitch rising This implies that there is going to be a shocking scenario and plot twist so it gives the audience a prior warning. Shows it’s quiet in morgue, builds tension because it is slow and high pitch. But you are anticipating the drip of water before you hear the sound. When the tube train pulls away from the station the pitch gets higher but for the length of time that the audience hear it makes it seem unnerving.
