3. Head-to- Head: A Silent Dialogue Protocol Purpose: Excellent way to engage students who are otherwise too shy or reserved to participate in a traditional classroom dialogue. This is also an effective strategy for ALL students to have their ‘voice’ heard in a not threatening environment

4. Head-to-Head: Step 1 : You will pair up by moving your desk into a “head to head” position. For today, you will do your best to position yourself in the vicinity of your partner Step 2: You will respond to two different prompts for today’s activity Prompt 1 : What are the benefits to conducting civil dialogue when engaging in inquiry and investigation?

5. Step 3 : You will now have 3 minutes to respond to the first prompt Step 4 : Now that time has expired you will exchange your paper with your partner. You will have 3 minutes to read and then respond to their writing. For this part you may want to include positive feedback or ask questions on specific parts of their initial writing. It is important that we train our students to not directly criticize ideas but to ask probing questions in order to allow additional understanding for both parties.

6. Step 5: Based on the interest of the participants you may once again exchange papers. If the topic begins to become ‘stale’, you can move on to an additional question. Step 6 : You will now repeat the process with the next question Prompt 2: What are some of the barriers that may prevent the use of exemplary civil dialogue at your school site?
