Art Criticism Artwork Title : The Sleeping Gypsy Artist Name : Henri Rousseau Media : Oils on canvas

Description The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau I see a dark sky, with a full moon, with desert sand dunes in the back, with a little lake and a lion sniffing the woman’s hair while wearing a striped dress sleeping next to a guitar with a clay bottle. I can learn that gypsy move around a lot and don’t usually sleep on beds since they move around a lot they sleep anywhere. The Subjects in this painting is the Gypsy and the lion. The lines are fine, there are organic shapes, the colors are mostly warm and a little, the texture looks smooth. The artist used oils.

Analysis The focal point is the lions face and the woman's face. There is an asymmetrical balance. The mood is relaxed and calming. There is a normal proportions. There are irregular patterns in the mountains and in her dress. The movement is the two faces to the moon. There is much variety of the design of the dress and landscape.

Interpretation Yes there is symbolism in this paint, it is the lion. Its meaning is that not all animals are bad and some may comfort you and care for you. The artist was trying to make us feel calm because of the dark colors. This does not exactly remind me of anything but maybe when I go to the beach, and when I was thirsty. This expresses how gypsys live and travel.

Judgment I think he failed in putting details. He succeeded in creating emotions. He painted in a three dimensional style. I don’t think this is unique besides the lady’s dress and guitar the rest could be done the same. I think he could have added more details in the guitar and ground.
