Gyroplanes (Gyrocopters) Jaromír Fryščák
2
Basic description Heavier than air Main rotor powered by flowing air Thrust provided by pusher/tractor propeller powered by engine The idea was inspired by maple seed
3
Gyrocopter Controls Control stick -> rotor head Pedals -> rudder Throttle lever -> power
4
Advantages of gyrocopters Wide range of speed ( 30 – 200 km/h) Very short distance for landing (10 m) – no runway needed Small proportions – parking even in a garage Low purchace and operational costs Safety – no crash last 20 years
5
Disadvantages of gyrocopters Unable to fly in zero or negative G – danger of fall and loss of control Glide ratio cca 3,5 high drag Low load capacity
6
History of gyroplanes The first airworthy: De la Cierva C6 (1925, Spain) First in Czechoslovakia: Avro 671 (Cierva) C.30A Mail delivery Military observation and recconnaisance in WWII 1950 - Fairey Rotodyne – transport gyroplane for 50 passengers Current use – sport flying
