The Tudors (no notes) The Tudors were a royal family who ruled England from 1485 until 1603. The first Tudor king was called Henry VII. He fought another king, Richard III, at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Richard was killed, Henry became king, and a new period of history began.

The Anglican Church Henry VIII Henry VIII was king of England from 1509 until 1547. He was born in 1491, and was only 17 years old when he became king.

The Anglican Church Marriage to Catherine of Aragon In 1509, Henry VIII had married Catherine of Aragon daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain (Inquisition) the union had produced no male heir to the throne and only one surviving child, a daughter, Mary. Henry was concerned about the political consequences of leaving only a female heir. At best a woman ruler meant a contested reign, at worst turmoil and revolution.

The Anglican Church Henry VIII A devout Catholic who brutally suppressed protestant movements in England…(until) Argued with the pope that he should be able to divorce The Pope said NO!!! Henry issued the “Act of Supremacy” which recognized the Church of England as a separate body led by the King. The C. of E. was almost identical to Catholic Church except Henry could divorce (and he did 5 times!!)

The Anglican Church The Elizabethan Settlement Queen Elizabeth Established the Anglican Church as a way appease both moderate Catholics and Protestants the only legal church in England Priests were allowed to marry Sermons were delivered in English Ceremony such as rich robes and gowns was kept
