Red Herring By: Hunter Jackson

Red Herring is used to redirect the conversation/debate onto a different topic in attempt to have a solution. What is Red Herring?

The duck tries to divert the conversation to remove the pressure applied by the questioning duck. The fallacy does not work because it is merely a distraction that cannot help further support the duck’s claim. It proposes a new subject that has no relation to the current topic. Picture Analisis

Red Herring in The Crucible… "Proctor (furious)-There might also be a dragon with five legs in my house, but no one has ever seen it.” Proctor tries to divert the attention off the topic and comes to an irrational conclusion. "Abagail-Gah! I'd almost forgot how strong you were John Proctor! Proctor- What's this mischief here?" Proctor changes the topic off his strength to the situation with Betty.

Universal Example Mother- Son have you done your homework tonight? Son- I really don't see how you could sit here and do laundry all day.(fallacy) Mother- Its actually quite easy if you ask me, clothes out of the dryer are so warm and soft. So how about that homework? Son- ugh no Mom!
