Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
2
About AYP Initiated by NCLB Student performance and participation rates on ISTEP+ in English/language arts and mathematics Student attendance rates for K-8 and graduation rates in high school Must make AYP for overall student population and demographic group with 30+ students AKA subgroup Every subgroup must make AYP for school to make AYP
3
Goal of AYP All students achieve proficiency (100%) in English/language arts and mathematics by 2014
4
Ways to make AYP Meet all performance, and attendance/graduation targets for entire student population Including each subgroup Reduce amount of students not making targets by 10% and meet attendance/graduation targets AKA Safe Harbor
5
What is Safe Harbor? Second way schools can make AYP if not all performance and participation targets have been met Reduce percentage of students not making AYP by 10% from year before School meets the “Other Indicator” for any student group Attendance/graduation rate of 95% or higher
6
Consequences Only for schools that CONSISTENTLY do not make AYP and participate in Title I Schools with high amounts of students from low-income families 2 years of not making AYP in a subject, school enters improvement status Series of interventions more extensive each year Title I school doesn’t make AYP
7
Improvement Status Corrective Action Replace school staff, new curriculum, decrease management authority, outside expert to advise/manage school, extend school day or year, or structure school’s internal organization Restructuring Reopen as charter school, replace all or some staff, have private management to operate school, or state takeover of school
8
Leaving Improvement Status Schools must make AYP in subject for 2 consecutive years
9
Some Data (2011) Total Indiana Schools: 1793 Total Schools not making AYP: 879 (49%) Muncie Central High School Never made AYP West View Elementary Made AYP every year since 2003 Frankfort Senior High School Did not make AYP in 2011 18 out of 31 schools in Delaware County made AYP in 2011
