1 Sensory Motor Training of Stress Allocation in Parkinson’s Disease Capri Williams /Kinesiology /Senior /Ph.D. in Neurophysiology Don Robin, Amy Parkinson, Bill Rogers, Peter Fox Human Performance Division Voice disorders are among the most serious disabilities that cause speech and communication handicaps PD is a major healthcare issue affective over 1 million in US Over 90% suffer voice & speech problems Muscle rigidity cannot provide mechanistic account of voice in PD Non-speech systems show inappropriate proprioceptive feedback Will pitch shift paradigm training result in improved ability to allocate stress during syllable production in individuals with PD? Due to limited info on neurobiology of treatment effects in PD, the understanding of neural network changes associated with auditory FB perturbation will allow for increased precision in the refinement of existing treatments, as well as development of new treatment paradigms in PD

2 METHODOLOGIES Mixed design, subjects assigned randomly to perturbation or no perturbation training SSP, fMRI, ERP Neuroimaging, brain mapping Pilot study MANOVA, Bayesian statistics, dynamic causal modeling

3 PROGRESS REPORT WHAT HAVE YOU COMPLETED TO DATE? PSP script, meta-analysis lit review, IRB protocol, brain mapping WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED TO DO? Run students in lab, data analysis WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO PRESENT AT THE END OF THE SUMMER? Data, basic results WHAT UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED? Computer programming WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANOTHER UNDERGRADUATE EMBARKING ON A SUMMER RESEARCH PROJECT? Expect the unexpected HOW HAS THIS PROJECT (THUS FAR) CHANGED YOUR PERCEPTIONS OF RESEARCH AND POSSIBLE GRADUATE SCHOOL OR CAREER PURSUITS? Completely changed my career interests ANY OTHER COMMENTS ABOUT THE PROJECT OR SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM? Remarkable opportunity and exposure
