Preparing Students for Differentiation Elizabeth Kelly ED602

Fair is not everyone getting the same thing. Fair is everyone getting what they need. -Anonymous.

Our classroom may not be filled with elephants, fish and monkeys, but like these animals, you all have your own strengths and weaknesses, so it is only fair, that your individual needs are taken care of so you to find success.

How do we accomplish this task? DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION (tailoring teaching to meet each student’s needs)

Goals of Differentiation: Individualized learning experiences. ALL students grow in ALL areas. Curriculum in meaningful. Student-centered learning takes place and students become independent learners. Collaboration occurs. Students feel accepted.

Remember… This does not mean more work for those excelling in one area and less work for those that are struggling. Differentiation is altering lessons, so that each student can connect with the material, reach a learning objective and still be challenged in his or her own way.

Your role: Acknowledge that you each have strengths and weaknesses and that these strengths and weaknesses differ from student to student. Accept your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as everyone else's, so a positive learning environment can be created. Set individual goals—take ownership in your learning! Have a say. Your input matters! ▫Help set class rules. ▫Help set class goals. ▫Share what is working in the classroom and what is not.

Role of Teacher Formatively assess and monitors students’ skill levels and interests. Creates a variety of lessons and activities based on these assessments, so each student’s needs are met. Challenge students. Communicate with students as well as parents/guardians.

"Schools are like airport hubs; student passengers arrive from many different backgrounds.... Their particular takeoffs into adulthood will demand different flight patterns." - Dr. Mel Levine

It is my goal as a teacher to help you with your own flight pattern and watch you soar!
