Kaufer as Heads of involved divisions. 5Years, until 2015 Goals of the VLT Software The following goals have been identified for the coming releases of VLT Software: Keep the observatory operational Provide development and support teams with a usable operational environment and tools Facilitate the development of new instruments with up-to-date technology Address hardware obsolescence in existing control systems at the VLT Maximize the technical benefits of the E-ELT and prepare for its construction in Paranal

Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 History: o VLTSW2011: restructuring according to roadmap, switch from cmm to svn; based on SL 5.5, VxWorks 5.5(68k) 6.4(PPC) o VLTSW2013: SL 6.3 (64 bits) VxWorks 5.5.1 + 6.9.3; some portability issues with Tcl/Tk/BLT widgets. Some support for 64 bits applications introduced. VLTSW still 32 bits o VLTSW2014: 20Years VLTSW releases! Consolidation of 2013 SL 6.4, same VxWorks. LAST 32 bits version of the VLTSW. Consequence: This is the version we will maintain with patches. o VLTSW2015: Full support for 64 bits in VLTSW. Distribution 3 rd /4 th quarter 2015. Currently based on SL 6.5, VxWorks 6.9.3.3 (Intel platform supported). OS, infrastructure and applications will be 64 bits. No support anymore for 32 bits if possible. VLTSW Infrastructure

Some possible “tracks”: Extension of multi-threading support Publish/Subscribe interface GUIs Please express your needs; your input will be very valuable. VLTSW Infrastructure

Instrument Control System Seminar, 20 th -24 th October 2014 Instrument development policy with respect to VLTSW releases: Development shall start with most recent released version of the VLTSW supporting used Hardware. PAE: Shall be passed with most recent released version of the VLTSW (3 Month old at least) Consortium responsibility to decide if during development cycle porting to new release. Paranal commissioning shall also be concluded with most recent version of the VLTSW supported by operations on Paranal. The corresponding porting effort should clearly appear in the contractual documents. VLTSW Infrastructure
