www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Publishing ethics & research integrity All contributors should be fairly acknowledged To be named as an author, a researcher must have made a substantial contribution in a combination of; conception and design of the project, analysis and interpretation of the data drafting or revising significant parts approving the final version to be published; AND agrees to be accountable if questions are raised about the integrity of the work. https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/_files_nhmrc/publications/attachments/r39.pdf

13
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Enabling replication Have a ‘Data Management Plan’ Document ‘process’ meticulously Archive copies of any software and materials Be prepared to share these things with other researchers https://dmp.qut.edu.au/
14
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Choosing when to publishing Don’t publish too soon – wait until you have a good story to tell. Uncited publications drag down your ‘average cites per paper’ metric Aim for a cite-worthy article in a quality peer reviewed journal In some disciplines, a peer reviewed conference publication is equivalent to a peer reviewed journal article – but in others disciplines it is better to focus on journals (talk to your supervisor or CI)
15
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Preparation Make the journals you are targeting your regular read –This gets you into the frame (you will know what each journal is looking for) –You may be able cite an article from the journal (ensure it is relevant)
16
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Polishing your manuscript Refine your argument until it is tight (get feedback from colleagues) –Why this sample? –Why this method? –How does hypothesis connect to the theoretical framework?
17
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Polishing your manuscript Is the manuscript logically organised? Is the story easy to follow? Is the argument clearly presented early on? Are the ‘Results and Discussions’ sections addressing the main points? Do they provide clear conclusions? Are the paragraphs logically structured and connected by smooth transitions? Do they start with generalities and move towards specifics? Do they only contain one idea/theme per paragraph?
18
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Polishing your manuscript Are sentences appropriately structured and linked? Do they use the ‘active voice’? Is the manuscript concise and overall length appropriate? Is there any redundant material that could be omitted? Is there any overlap between the different sections? Is the manuscript appropriately referenced where needed? Are the terminology, units and scales consistent throughout the manuscript?

22
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Finding journals with the right ‘scope’ Ask you supervisor or CI for advice Search Scopus or Web of Science to identify journals publishing articles on your topic
23
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Finding Journals with the right ‘timeframe’ ‘Help Me Publish’ This app allows you to search for journals in a discipline and then filter by speed and acceptance rate. https://helpmepublish.org/ If speed of publication is important, consider submitting to a mega-journal as these tend to have shorter turn- around times (and acceptance rates).
24
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Finding journals which will enhance ‘reach’ Open Access maximises reach as your article is not limited to just those who can afford subscriber access. Directory of Open Access Journals DOAJ https://doaj.org/ https://doaj.org/ Sherpa-Romeo database of publisher policies on open access http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/search.php?l a=en&fIDnum=|&version=&mode=advanced

26
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Scopus Journal Analyser Compare SNIP values
27
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Final checks (before submitting) Have you read and adhered to the Instructions to Authors? Does the cover letter make a strong case for publication of the manuscript in the journal of choice? Does it contain all the information requested by the journal? Have you followed the instructions regarding acceptable and excluded reviewers?
28
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Rejections Reasons for rejections prior to review –Bad fit (subject to scope of journal) –Presentation - First pass down to title, abstract –Clear and justified theory Reasons for rejections after review –Lack of contribution (92% rejections due to this) –Failure to develop theoretical contribution –Fatal flaws in methods –Deficiencies in analysis
29
www.library.qut.edu.au LIBRARY SERVICES Revise and re-submit “So what…?” factor If you are asked to revise and resubmit… Create a feedback table and be sure to address each point Being asked to revise is a positive. You passed round 1
