www.dredging.org 2 …are natural element of any surface water …are highly movable, in estuaries in 2 directions …are not limited through water bodies …form habitats and shape hydromorphology Sediments  They are closely interrelated with WFD implementation

www.dredging.org 3 Sediment Management … is of importance for NavigationIndispensable for Ports and Waterways HydropowerSedimentation in reservoirs and dams AgricultureSediments form fertile floodplains Flood protectionSedimentation on floodplains during inundations has 2 main aspects QuantityAnnually in Europe about 200 Million m 3 dredged material for navigation QualitySediment contamination can be a challenge for entire river basins

www.dredging.org 4 Sediment Management - a cross-cutting issue Scientifically in the water – soil – groundwater continuum Legally with links besides WFD to Marine environment (EU & international conventions) Soil strategy Waste legislation Protection of nature and biodiversity  Sediment Management is highly complex with many involved interests and stakeholders!

SedNet European Sediment Network for environmentally, socially and economically viable practices of sediment management on river basin scale Funded by EC DG-Research from 2002 – 2004 Is continued since 2005 with founding and Steer Group members from Germany, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Italy, cooperation with UNESCO. Round Table Discussion "Sediment management – an essential element of River Basin Management Plans“ 22 + 23 November 2006 in Venice with invited speakers from different sectors to identify future needs, possible activities, solutions

www.dredging.org 6 CEDA … recognises the high complexity of sediment issues. The SedNet Round Table initiative is meant to identify future needs and actions to reach WFD objectives with proper sediment management. … asks DG ENV, MS / River Commissions and NGOs to support this initiative. Based on the outcome of the Round Table initiative future integration of sediment issues into the CIS process should be discussed with DG ENV.
