Seniors American Government, Ch. 7: The Deficit and Debt

 Determine the difference between the deficit and the debt  Determine how the deficit effects the national debt  Determine the long-term effects of the national debt

 By “raising your hand,” would anyone like to try to explain what they think the difference between the deficit and the national debt is to the rest of the class?  I’ll enable the “microphone” privileges to let a few of you explain to the class  Now using the “type box” please let me know who you agree with

 federal deficit - an excess of the federal government's spending over its revenue ( federal deficit )  For example: in Fiscal Year 2013, the deficit was only $680 billion  Meaning that we spent $680 more than what we brought in as revenue

 National Debt- is the total amount of money owed by the government to its debtors and bond holders  For example: our national debt was $2.1 billion in the year 1900

Directions: Use the pointer tool to answer the following: 1. The US spent $1.4 trillion more than it brought in for FY 2009. This is the deficit or the debt 2. That $1.4 trillion then is added to the deficit or the debt Using both the emoticons and the green/red marks, do we understand so far? Any questions?

 Small groups  I’ve split you all up amongst 5 small groups to come up with an explanation and an example of both the deficit and the debt.  I will be joining each group to make sure that we understand the concept or to answer any questions

 Using the pen tool, write your name AND what your guess for what the national debt is currently at.  Ready. Set. Go!

 Three parts:  Find (and cite your source) the national debt and the deficit for the following years: 1800, 1865, 1920, 1950, 1990, 2000 and 2010  Which of these years (if any) did we run a surplus?  Find the deficit and national debt for the year each of your parents were born  Due Tuesday

 For 10 bonus points: bring in an article about the debt or deficit and write a one paragraph summary  Due Tuesday
