5 www.cie.org.uk Structure of the syllabus (1) There are 37 topics listed in the syllabus. The Core curriculum is applicable to all students The Extended (Supplement) curriculum builds on the Core material and the relevant sections are placed next to each other in the syllabus

8 www.cie.org.uk Assessment Objectives (1) Objectives 12, 13 and 15 are specifically related to Extension level Assessment Objectives could be considered in borderline Core/Extended entry cases for students

11 www.cie.org.uk Assessment Objectives (4): Papers 1, 2 and 3 are answered on the question paper and provide working space for students. Paper 4 is answered on separate paper and students may be required to use separate graph paper for some questions.

12 www.cie.org.uk Assessment Objectives (5): Coursework 0581 option involves coursework in addition to the examination papers From 2006, one piece of coursework is sufficient Worth 20% of the final grade CIE only allow coursework to improve the exam grade

13 www.cie.org.uk Assessment Objectives (6): Coursework Centres need written approval from CIE to undertake the coursework option Approval is granted for teachers who satisfy CIE requirements for the moderation of coursework Centres receive in-service training through the distance learning packs

14 www.cie.org.uk Formative assessment (1): Summative assessment Terminal testing and interim testing No individual feedback on summative assessments that involve public examinations Formative assessment Assessing student progress regularly Feedback to students Feedback used to improve student performance

15 www.cie.org.uk Formative assessment (2): The nature of formative assessment Formative assessment involves an interaction between the student and teacher The teacher is able to assess progress, for example, by feedback on tests, etc. True formative assessment encourages improvement in performance
