Warm-up 4.4 (stapled) Staple into your notebooks the “Chapter 1-2 Quick Card Questions.” Look over these questions, and choose three in which you feel you need to focus on/ think about more during the warm-up time. Answer these three tougher questions in your warm-up notebook, 2+ sentences each. We will go over all of these questions mid- lesson.

3. Quick Card (QC) Discussion Questions, Chapter 1 When a question appears, I will draw a card—for today, only one person will reply. Everyone will have a chance to reply, and is required to reply. Responses should be kept under a minute, and no more. This is not to discourage higher levels of thinking, but rather, to review key details quickly. There are 32 questions, and we will lose time if such expectations are not followed through. If such rules are not followed, or complained about, you render yourself ineligible to speak up for the day—which is detrimental to your learning. I will share the questions first to look So, be respectful.

Hinton describes Ponyboy the way she does? What obvious differences occur between the Soc’s and the Greasers? How tough are the Greasers, exacrtly?

Quick Card (QC) Discussion Questions, Chapter 1 Using STEAL, describe the following characters: – Ponyboy – Darry – Sodapop – Johnny – Sylvia Society sometimes puts down the Soc’s for too many parties, but then turns around and praises them. What are they praised for? Do they deserve this praise? How is this praise good for them (if at all)?

Quick Card (QC) Discussion Questions, Chapter 1 After watching the brief synopsis of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, do you think Ponyboy is right to compare himself to Pip, based on what you know? Why or why not? One of S.E. Hinton’s purposes of writing The Outsiders is to highlight the effect of social class on people. Why do you think she felt this was important? What is odd about the setting in chapter one, compared to the type of setting you might expect of a book about gangs?

7. Quick Card (QC) Discussion Questions, Chapter 1 Darry is the leader of the Greasers, a struggling individual who had to drop out of school. How might a gang leader normally be described or pictured? What about the introduction of Ponyboy? What would you expect of such an at-risk, troubled teen? (Think about the skateboarders Mike Smith mentioned in the assembly we went to last week.) What is strange and different about the Greasers compared to other typical gangs?

8. Quick Card (QC) Discussion Questions, Chapter 2 Contrast Dally with Sodapop. What are their biggest differences? What are the Greasers two main rules? How can each be beneficial? How can each be harmful? Why would someone join a clique if they don’t quite fit the stereotype (like a Soc who isn’t super jocky or angry)? What hidden problems might Soc’s have, even though they appear to have less problems than the Greasers?

What are some “safe” cliques you can think of that exist on this campus (or other campuses you’ve been on) that still have their problems? What are the problems? Why doesn’t Ponyboy believe Cherry when she says that the Soc’s have problems too? What is Hinton trying to show about the power of male-female friendships, especially as they cross difference social gropus? What other movies, plays, stories, etc., might this remind you of?

Is it always this way? Why or why not? Why does Hinton suggest the possibility of resolution so early? Why must conflict still play out over so many chapters? What do you think Hinton might be trying to teach us as a general society- rule-of-thumb?
