Components of Advocacy 1.Take a clear stand. 2.Explain why the stand taken is good. 3.Use information to support the choice. 4.Show awareness of the audience for the message. 5.Be persuasive. 6.Show conviction about the message.

Ask yourself: What is my passion? Who are my allies? Why should others care? What is the problem? Who can fix it? What motivates him/her? Passion

Get to know your legislators: State Representatives and Senators Federal Congresspeople and Senators Network with your allies: Like-minded organizations Diverse organizations with a common goal Develop a grassroots network.

Tailor Your Messages Who can fix it? What motivates him/her? What can they do? Two Stakeholders

Speak their language. Connect to their passion or goals. Avoid jargon. Avoid “red flags.” Give them positive press. Know the calendar. Use the process.
