6 Ask yourself: What is my passion? Who are my allies? Why should others care? What is the problem? Who can fix it? What motivates him/her? Passion

9 Get to know your legislators:  State Representatives and Senators  Federal Congresspeople and Senators Network with your allies:  Like-minded organizations  Diverse organizations with a common goal Develop a grassroots network.

11 Tailor Your Messages Who can fix it? What motivates him/her? What can they do? Two Stakeholders

12 Speak their language. Connect to their passion or goals. Avoid jargon. Avoid “red flags.” Give them positive press. Know the calendar. Use the process.

Knocked on doors in your neighborhood or community Made calls through a phone bank Wrote a letter Equipped students to write letters Met face-to-face with a board Spoken face-to-face with a state legislator or aide Spoken face-to-face with a US legislator or aide Organized a legislative day
