2 Mexican National Era What – time when Mexico gained Independence, Mexico created a constitution, and colonizing Texas began When - 1800’s to 1830’s Who – Mexican citizens, Empresarios, Anglo-Americans Where – area know as Texas today Why – To start a government on their own and start colonizing Texas

3 Moses Austin Who is Moses Austin? –Anglo American, father of Stephen F. Austin What happened to him during the depression? –Owned a coal mine, mine was shut down after the depression and lost all of his money. What did he want to do in Texas? –Moses Austin wanted to colonize to gain back the money he lost in the depression. He received approval but died before he could colonize Texas.

4 Stephen F. Austin Who is Stephen F. Austin- –The son of Moses Austin, who will colonize Texas after his father’s request How did he get settlers into Texas? –He put advertisements in several newspapers, promoting lots of cheap, fertile land, great for ranching. What type of settlers was he looking for? –Wealthy ranchers who are great citizens and ready for hard work.

5 Old 300 Who was a part of the “Old 300”? –The first 300 families to settle into Texas with Stephen F. Austin. Wealthy ranchers, farmers, doctors, lawyers Where did the settle in Texas? –They settled on prime farmland along the rivers of Brazos, Colorado, and San Jacinto River What was life like for them? –Life was not easy for them, they dealt with droughts, cold winters, Native Americans

6 Slavery What was the issue on slavery in Texas? – Few slaves lived in Texas before colonization. Southern farmers, however, brought many enslaved African Americans into Texas. What affects did the Law of 1829 have on Texas? –Mexico became a refuge for runaway slaves. the law was not enforced in Mexican Texas. Although the government did not prevent slavery in Texas, its disapproval of the institution may have slowed the growth of slavery

7 People of Colonial Texas Old 300 – –The first Anglo-Americans to settle in Texas who settled in Brazos County. Women and children – –Women took care of housework, farming, tending to the family but are not allowed to vote or participate in juries –Children worked on the farm with their family. If they come for a wealthy family they attend school.

8 Road to Revolution Who is Mier y Teran? –A Mexican official who was sent to inspect Texas after the Fredonian Rebellion. What did he want for Texas? What were his suggestions? –He urged the government to place more troops around the settlements, work to attract more Mexican and European settlers, and develop more trade between Texas and Mexico.

9 Colonel Bradburn Who was Colonel Bradburn? –A native of Virginia, Bradburn joined the fight for Mexican independence and, as a reward, was made a colonel in the Mexican army. What did he do to turn Anahuac against him? –He enforced the duty on goods imported by ships into Texas. Why did he arrest Travis and Jack? – He believed the two had been spreading false rumors and interfered with his efforts to enforce the laws

10 Law of April 6, 1830 What is the Law of April 6, 1830? –A law based on many of Mier y Terán’s recommendations. How did this affect the Anglo-Americans? – Anglo-Americans immigration to Texas was banned –Empresarios could no longer sell land –Forbade enslaved people from being brought into Texas –Added taxes to foreign goods

11 Bustamante Who is Bustamante? –Bustamante was the President of Mexico during the 1820’s Why did the Anglo-Americans dislike him in Texas? –The Anglo-Americans disliked Bustamante because he was a Centralist not a Federalist. What eventually happens to him? –He is kicked out of office and replaced by Santa Anna a Federalist.

12 Turtle Bayou Resolutions What was the Turtle Bayou Resolution? –Texas declared loyalty to Mexico and Santa Anna not to the Mexican government

13 Convention of 1832 & 1833 What was the Convention of 1832? –They wanted to continue immigration from the United States and for Texas to be exempt from import duties for three years. In a new move, the convention asked that Texas be made a separate state of Mexico. What was the Convention of 1833? –The Convention of 1833 adopted resolutions like the ones adopted the year before. However, this meeting went further than asking to make Texas a separate state.
