What Are We Going to Learn? Reproduction and Human Development is the Life Sciences section of the Science 9 course. We will investigate the following topics: 1. Basic Genetics 2. Cellular reproductive Processes: Mitosis and Meiosis 3. Sexual and Asexual Reproduction 4. Human Reproduction and Contraceptive Technologies
3
Genetics Introduction In the introduction to genetics, we will learn about the heredity of particular traits and features. We will discuss the contribution of genes and alleles to particular traits, and analyze the difference between dominant and recessive traits. We will also look at Punnett squares to determine the traits that certain parents will have.
4
Mitosis and Meiosis We are going to learn how cells divide, and the steps involved at each stage. We will learn about the genetic material that is present in the cell, such as chromosomes, genes, and DNA. Examine the cell theory and how it relates to cell division, as well as a basic study of what cancer actually is.
5
Sexual and Asexual Reproduction We will learn the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction, as well as why some organisms produce one way, the other, or BOTH. We will examine the reproductive strategies of some plants, including pollination and animal pollinators. See examples of creatures that reproduce using different strategies.
6
Human Reproduction
7
In order to study this section and do a good job of it, we are going to have to be mature in this class. We will compare and contrast the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems. We will discuss the development and function of reproductive AND contraceptive technologies. Discuss moral and ethical issues that arise from the use of such technologies.
