BROOKE BAKER JOHNSON TRADITIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL 7 TH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS SEMICOLON AND COLON USAGE Technology Lesson Presentation
2
Description of Lesson Semicolon/Colon Usage Technology Used: : Clickers, SMART Board, PowerPoint, Video, Computer/Internet 30 Students Activities Included: Clicker pretest and post test, Video over punctuation, SMART board PowerPoint activity, Brainpop (activities include vocab, practice sentences, quiz) Problem Solving: Students had to determine punctuation problems within sentences during the PowerPoint activity, as well as in the Brainpop activity Assessments: Sponge/Exit slips daily, Clicker pretest/posttest, printed Brainpop activities
3
Technology Used Technology Used: Clickers were used to introduce semicolons/colons through a pretest and to assess student learning in a posttest SMART Board was used to complete an interactive PowerPoint where students had to insert punctuation marks into practice sentences Video was used to introduce punctuation rules Computer/Internet was used for students to work interactively on Brainpop
4
Technology Used Cont. Capabilities: Gets students involved in hands-on learning, allows students to experience different types of technology and practice using technology skills Limitations: Clicker activities are impossible for absent students to makeup, Brainpop could be made up but only if students have access to a computer and Internet, Teachers have to work around computer lab schedules or clicker schedules (may not be available when you want to use them) Potential: We are a technology driven society! Students must know how to use a computer, peruse the Internet safely and effectively, they must be able to adapt to new technologies because it is ever changing. All of this will help students with their personal needs, workplace needs and life long learning.
5
Method of Delivery Clicker activities were delivered through SMART Response and SMART Notebook 10 software Punctuation video was delivered through my CD drive of my teacher computer and shown through the projector Brainpop was delivered via Internet site www.brainpop.com www.brainpop.com SMART Board PowerPoint activity was delivered through SMART technology and mounted projector

Supporting Diverse Learners When creating this lesson, I made sure to support the needs of different learners. I provided activities that met different multiple intelligences. Linguistic- Written sponges, exit slips, Brainpop activities (vocab) Spatial- Punctuation video, SMART board PowerPoint activity, Brainpop (video and activities) Intrapersonal- Brainpop activities, clicker Interpersonal- SMART board PowerPoint activity I also made sure to vary the difficulty of the practice sentences and questions to assess where all students were. Assistive Technology: I provided additional sites, while in the lab, that gave further information about semicolons/colons; students can continue to use Brainpop to work on punctuation skills

Managing Technology Clickers Clickers will be passed out and collected by the teacher each class period. There are thirty-two clickers, each labeled with a number. Students have their login information in their agenda. There is a six digit number underneath their library barcode on their hall pass page. As I pass out clickers, I will have students record their number by their login information so that each time we use the clickers they will have the same one. As I collect the clickers, I will check for any missing keys, excessive scratch marks, etc. If students demonstrate inappropriate use of clickers they will receive a discipline referral. Students will be walked through how to get logged on to their clicker and will follow step by step instructions from me.

Managing Technology Computer Lab Expectations and management for the computer lab- Students sit at an assigned computer the entire year. Students will know their computer number before going to the lab. They have their log on and password information in their agenda. When students have questions in the lab, they have a red, plastic cup that they put on top of their computer so that I can see they need help but they can continue to work. As soon as students are at their computer, they are to log on and pull up Internet Explorer. There will be specific directions projected on the screen. They will be using www.brainpop.com We will also discuss digital citizenship. www.brainpop.com Students are dismissed by rows. I check the computers before they leave to look for any damage to the computer (missing keys, etc.) Students are expected to follow all computer lab rules; failure to do so results in a disciplinary referral. Examples: no gum, candy, etc; no getting on sites/software that is not part of your assignment. Work that is printed is left in the printer and collected by teacher.

Was Your Lesson Effective? Yes, I feel that my lesson was very effective. Most students scores went up or stayed the same through clicker pretests and posttests. Clicker Pretest/Posttest Data Clicker Pretest/Posttest Graph All students were motivated, were highly engaged and participated in all activities. They loved the clickers and brainpop activities. We had used brainpop as a class to introduce a skill, but this was the first time they got to explore the site by themselves. Students knew very little before the lesson. They knew what the punctuation marks looked like, but that was about it.
10
Was Your Lesson Effective? Cont. After the lesson, they were able to tell different rules and use them in sentences. The could use the following rules: 1. Colons- time 2. Colons- greetings 3. Semicolons- to join two independent clauses 4. Semicolons- items in a series when the sentences have commas already Need to work on more: 1. Colons when you have a list To increase the effectiveness, I would use the textbook and workbook for additional practice. I would also give more time for independent practice. I also would have shown the video last.
11
Legal and Ethical Computer Use My lesson abides by copyright laws because I created the activities myself; had I used someone else's, I would have credited where I received it. All students must have a copy of the acceptable use policy on file at school in order to use the computers. Before working in the computer lab, we discussed digital citizenship. We also review computer lab rules. When we are researching and using the found research in our writing, I teach how to correctly document sources and give credit. We talk about the use of pictures and how we must credit those as well. When I use other people’s material in class, I give credit to wherever I got the information/activity, etc. so that my students know that I have to do this as well and see how important it is.
12
Cooperative Learning In this lesson, most of the activities were independent. However, the SMART board PowerPoint was collaborative. We worked as a class to insert semicolons/colons into sentences. Overall, we have collaberative work through partner work, group work and projects, peer conferences, pair shares, etc.
13
Technology as a Productivity Tool We use the Microsoft Office programs as productivity tools: Word- To create writing pieces PowerPoint- Student and teacher presentations Excel- Gather and analyze data Internet- To research for pieces; on-line interactive activities JAVA- Gradebook; create lesson plans
14
Technology as a Research Tool Technology for Distance Learning This specific lesson did not require students to do any research. However, there are many times that we use technology to research for writing pieces that we complete. Students must research material for their narrative article, as well as for informational and persuasive pieces. Students then use that research to help write their piece. Students also research different authors for author studies that we complete. Students can go to our school websites for links to help with homework, etc. http://www.jefferson.k12.k y.us/Schools/Middle/John son/index.html http://www.jefferson.k12.k y.us/Schools/Middle/John son/index.html Brainpop: www.brainpop.com www.brainpop.com Textbook links: http://classzone.com/book s/lnetwork_gr07/index.cf m http://classzone.com/book s/lnetwork_gr07/index.cf m

Technology Set Up I have a very large, rectangular shaped classroom. There are four student computers in one corner of the room, which have Internet access. They are set up on a network. There is a mounted projector in the ceiling that connects to my teacher laptop. I have a mounted SMART board above a set of cabinets, which connects through my computer. I have a document camera that is set up on a cart beside my desk. It connects through my computer and projector as well. Clickers are checked out through the computer lab. When I use them, they communicate with my laptop. Our STC, Shannon Thomas, takes care of all technology matters. She makes sure updates are completed, makes repairs, orders new software, etc. I maintain technology by keeping my document camera covered when not in use, checking for missing keys etc. on my student computers after use, pack laptop and equipment carefully when transporting it, install new updates in teacher laptop, etc.
16
Teaching with Technology Standards Communication and Collaboration-Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making- Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Technology Operations and Concepts-Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
17
Standards Cont. Teaching technology standards benefit today’s students because it allows them to participate in today’s high technology based society. It prepares them for the work place, allows them to become more self-sufficient, and keeps them more engaged in lessons. My lesson provides various opportunities for students to use different forms of technology (clickers, Internet, SMART tech). It definitely keeps them more engaged in the lesson.
