History of the Profession “Handmaiden” or assistant to the provider has always been a vital role First recognition of this was nursing Over time, the medical assistant has emerged and also plays a vital role in health care.

History of the Profession The last 100 years have seen medical technology expand by leaps and bounds More demands are placed on the staff of medical practices Nursing is primarily found in the acute-care setting The MA’s role has expanded more and more as testing and treatment have found their place increasingly in the office setting instead of the acute-care setting

History of the Profession Defined in 1991 by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) “Medical Assisting is an allied health profession whose practitioners function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures.”

Scope of Practice Varies state to state Important to note that medical assisting is NOT a licensed profession MA’s are allowed to perform clinical procedures ONLY under the supervision of a licensed provider who has been granted the right to delegate (MD, DO, NP, PA)
