Motifs Recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can inform a texts major theme(s). May be an idea, object, place or statement. When symbols combine, they form: MOTIFS!!!

Themes The message, lesson, or meaning of a text. Most are implied, not said outright. Meaning of the text on an abstract level. Themes are usually supported by motifs.

Hades: The Underworld -Surrounded by the River Styx. -Charon ferried the souls of the dead across. -Needed a coin to pay him.

Cerberus: Three Headed dog that guards the gates of Hades.

Hades/ Pluto Brother of Zeus and Poseidon Ruler of the Underworld Married to Persephone God of dead, precious metals

Persephone/ Proserpine -Daughter of Demeter -Hades’ wife -Spent half the year in the Underworld (Fall/Winter) and half the year on earth (Spring/Summer)
