SI Base Units of Measurement in Chemistry
2
SI Units for Mass and Volume Mass: the amount of matter that an object contains –Base Unit: gram –Most Common Derived Unit: kilogram = 1000 grams “kilo means one thousand” Volume: the amount of space that matter occupies or takes up –Base Unit: liter –Most Common Derived Unit: milliliter = 1/1000 liters or “one thousandth of a liter”
3
SI Units for Length and Time Length: the distance from one end of the object to the other end of an object –Base Unit: meter –Most Common Derived Units: centimeter = 1/100 meters “one-hundredth of a meter” & kilometer = 1000 meters Time: a measurement of the duration of an event –Base Unit: second
4
SI Unit for Temperature and Conversion Base Unit: Kelvin –The Kelvin scale does not use negative numbers. It starts at O K which is equal to -273 degrees Celsius. To convert Celsius to Kelvin, the formula is Celsius temp + 273 = Kelvin temp To convert from Kelvin to Celsius, the formula is Kelvin temp – 273 = Celsius temp Converting from Celsius to Fahrenheit –(1.8 x C temp) + 32 = F temp
5
Common Derived Units Involving Two Different Unit Types Velocity: measured in meters per second or (m/s) Density: mass per volume of space (g/mL) Area: length multiplied by width (m 2 )
