Schedule is being adjusted to meet the State Requirements for Response to Intervention (RTI) and the Opportunity for our Students to take classes at Byington Solway. Byington Solway: Students will be able to ride a bus for ½ day to take CTE (Career Technical Education) classes. BHS is one of 2 schools that will be Piloting the Online capabilities that Family Portal has for Students to Register for Classes Teacher Recommendations will be preloaded Counselors will have reviewed students transcripts prior and will have loaded any classes needed for graduation 3/9/20166

Completing the Registration Form Students should have a prework registration form and an ELECTIVE Sheet: yellow9th 1 green (11 th ), blue (10 th ) or yellow (9th) ALL GRADUATION INFORMATION & course selection options are on the registration form & on the website. Course Selections are a polling of interest; not a 100% guarantee of selections. STEP 1: Carefully select 9 course offerings and 3 alternates – Core academic courses have been automatically enrolled or recommended in Family Portal (aka ASPEN, Family/Parent Portal) – On the front of the form, when selecting your courses, be sure to write in the full course name exactly as it is shown on the back of the sheet – Select the remaining courses to fill in the 9 course offerings – Students will meet with Counselors in groups to learn how to Register Online and Discuss Course Selections 3/9/20168

Completing the Online Registration Form STEP 2: Academic Release – complete only if you disagree with the core class teacher recommendations or need a Level Change; Found on the Website STEP 3: Review your transcript in Family Portal, graduation requirements, Focused Plan of Study (remember that Canvas assignment?!) and discuss course selections with your parents. 3/9/20169

Completing the Online Registration Form STEP 4: Choose your selections online on or before March 7 th @ 3:30 pm in Family Portal. NOTE: No selections submitted means courses will be chosen for you. Step 5: Click Post when you have made your final decisions. This indicates to your counselor you have made your final decisions. Step 6: Don’t Forget to Screen Shot Your Courses when Finished It also acknowledges you have discussed your requests with your parents. 3/9/201610

Application/Audition Courses NOTE-If a student’s listed alternate courses won’t schedule, counselors will select courses that will best meet graduation requirements and work within the confines of BHS’ master schedule. 3/9/2016 The following classes are APPLICATION or AUDITION courses. If you selected one of these classes and you are not selected for that course, it will be replaced with one of your alternates: Virtual Enterprise, Leadership, Peer Tutor, Annual Staff, Newspaper Staff, Female Acappella, Mixed Acappella, BHS Singers, Musical Theatre, Stage Tech, Acting 3, Hon Art Photo, AP Art 2-D, AP Art 3-D, AP Art Drawing, AP Art History, AP Music Theory, Honors Art, & Worked Based Learning (includes CTE WBL, Senior Out of School Experience & Academic WBL all must related to Elective Focus). Directions for Each Section Pay Close Attention to the Directions and Important Notes for each Section on the Online portion. It provides valuable information that helps you to make the best decision in selecting courses and prevents disappointment when you are removed from a course when you do not meet requirements. 3/9/201616

Example of Directions: All students are required to register for 9 classes and 3 alternates. Online Registration closes March 7, 2016 at 3:30 pm. Teachers have already made recommendations for next year's Core Classes (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies). If you are requesting an override of a teacher's recommendation, an Academic Release must be signed and returned to the school counseling office. The Academic Release Form can be found on the School Counseling Registration 2016-17 Website. By posting requests, you are acknowledging that you have discussed with your parents your course selections. By not posting any requests by March 7, 2016 at 3:30, you understand that your school counselor will select my courses based on what is needed for graduation. Yearlong Courses Note distinction between yearlong or semester on course selection sheet. Enrollment in the linked courses is a BINDING AGREEMENT and the schedule WILL NOT BE ALTERED during the school year. You will sign up for these classes in 2 course offering slots. 2/9/1518

rising Sophomore notes 4 or 5 required classes If you are not in a school-sponsored sport, marching band, or taking 2 semesters of ROTC; sign up for a PE course Have you started your foreign language yet? Your Elective Focus courses should build on past & current elective courses; (e.g., if you had Health Sci Education this year, select EF courses in the CTE column which have “Health Sci Education”) Focus on GPA, especially if hoping to take DE courses in Junior/Senior year. 2/9/1519

Toughest Year Academically Remember your GPA and ACT are a part of the consideration for TN HOPE Scholarship If you are in English 3 CP, then you will also be in a “Technical Writing” course which is really “Writing for College” This is a required course for all CP level English 3 students. rising Junior notes 2/9/1520

rising Junior notes Pay close attention to Important Notes in ASPEN about AP Lit & AP US History Yearlong & ENG 3 CP 3:40 PM Offerings If you want to take AP Lit & AP US History Yearlong, you must indicate that you want to take as YEARLONG in the Notes to Counselor Section; the default will be SEMESTER If you are interested in a 3:40 pm Eng 3 class, you must indicate this interest in the Course Name box on the long sheet 2/9/1521

If you have “Hon Chem 2/AP Chem” in your course selections, you should keep this or select another AP level science course. If you do not have a science course showing on your Core Academic Requests, select a science that compliments your interests. rising Senior notes Classes that require Separate Applications Early graduation Senior Out of School Experience & WBL – Must be Connected to Your Elective Focus: Applications will be available after Mar. 4 th Teacher's aide is no longer an option. You can be creative and apply for SOSE or WBL but the projects must relate to your elective focus and "be more educationally beneficial to the student than financially beneficial to the institution." This statement is in relation to unpaid experiences like teacher's aide. Dual Enrollment – English and Math placements are driven by ACT sub scores and therefore may change after the State ACT Peer Tutoring 2/9/15 23

rising Senior notes Pay close attention to Important Notes in ASPEN about DE Eng Comp Class Placement & Eng 4 CP 7 AM Class. All CP Eng 3 students who meet the requirements with the PLAN scores & GPA are currently enrolled in DE English 1010; your scores & GPA will be rechecked before finalization of schedules If you are interested in 6:50 Eng 4 CP or Econ/PF Classes you need to indicate that in the Notes to Counselor Section 2/9/1524

Dual Enrollment: How do students enroll? Option 1: Take a class at BHS 2 or 3 days a week Psychology (11 th and 12 th ) English Composition 1010 and 1020 (12 th ) Encourage Juniors who received an A in CP Eng 3 and qualifying test scores to enroll in DE English College Math (12 th ) Option 2: Take a class at PSTCC “Off Campus Dual Enrollment” ** Must receive either an A or B in order to keep grant eligibility. Grant is only available to Jrs and Srs. 3/9/201625

Dual Enrollment (Jrs & Srs) Dual Enrollment Grant has changed Different rules for Class 2017 & Beyond Classes of 2017 & Beyond First 2 classes are awarded up to $500 3 rd class – only $200 4 th class – no money awarded 3/9/201626 Only Core Dual Enrollment Classes will be awarded 1.0 weight (Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, or college courses that exceed or are equivalent to an AP Course). Steps to Dual Enrollment Choose desired courses during BHS registration and indicate through Online Registration. Complete the Dual Enrollment application available during registration in the Counseling Office & Website and return to your School Counselor. Register to take the ACT if necessary. June test scores will be accepted. Attend Dual Enrollment meeting held in April. 3/9/201627

Online Registration for DE Classes Rising Seniors Info OFF CAMPUS DE CLASSES are grouped by subject area. Please choose the subject area closest to the Course you are taking. An example is DE Spanish I = DE Foreign Lang. This tells the counselor you are taking the DE Spanish class Off Campus at Pellissippi. 3/9/201628
