Many New People to N. America ► French, Dutch, Irish, Swiss, Portuguese, English, German

Open land creates opportunity ► plenty of area to farm and a chance to own a piece of land ► poorest people worked as indentured servants ► could work for a certain number of years and earn freedom

Ocean provided opportunity ► Tied colonists with homeland Could use to carry business with people from England or other countries ► Helped to ship their goods with other colonies ► England allowed Privateers—Legal pirates—to overtake other countries goods

Early Life in the Colonies Family life ► Every person had to help with the farm

► Women had to cook, clean, sew, tend to the animals, make butter and cheese, etc. ► In order to have extra help, families were big-- 10 -22 children were not unheard of ► The mother was usually the teacher-- except in very wealthy families ► Children not allowed to choose their future ► Parents placed kids in an apprenticeship (where they learned a trade) or in school to become a minister or lawyer

Education ► American colonists pushed education- mostly by teaching and reading the bible ► First college was Harvard-- used to teach ministers. lawyers, judges, and governors
