Do Now: What’s your type?  Your blood type, that is!  Do you know it? (You might want to check your driver’s license if you don’t)  If you do not know your blood type – have you heard the word before? What does it mean?

BLOOD TYPES

Four Types  A  B  AB  O

Copy this grid into your notes.. AntigensAntibodiesCan accept blood from Type A Type B Type AB Type O

What makes up a type?  Blood types are determined by the antigens (proteins) on their surface  Like nametags…  A type: A antigens  B type: ___ antigens  AB type: ____ antigens  O type: _____ antigens

Copy this grid into your notes.. AntigensAntibodiesCan accept blood from Type AA Type BB Type ABA, B Type O----

Protection  Our bodies also make antibodies to help fight off blood that ISN’T our type  Body makes antibodies of antigens it does NOT possess  Example: Type A would make B antibodies  Type B would make ____ antibodies?  Type AB would make ____ antibodies?  Type O would make ____ antibodies?

Copy this grid into your notes.. AntigensAntibodiesCan accept blood from Type AAB Type BBA Type ABA, B---- Type O----A, B

What happens if we mix…?  Anything with antigens that you have antibodies for will be destroyed

 Knowing this… What precautions should we take with transfusions?  A type can safely mix with ______?  AB type can safely mix with ____?

 Since AB doesn’t have antibodies, it can mix with anything!  Since O has A and B antibodies, it can only mix with O

Second Antigen: Rh Factor  Only two types: Rh positive or negative  UNLIKE A and B antigens, the body doesn’t make antibodies for Rh automatically if it is negative  If exposed once, it will make the antibodies  If exposed again, the body will attack  Issue: Rh- woman giving birth to two Rh+ babies..

Baby Daddy Drama.  A woman with blood type AB (I A I B ) marries a man with blood type O (ii). The child has blood type AB (I A I B ). Is this man the child’s father?  Step One: Draw a punnett square and put the parents on each side iAiB i i

How to Tell…  A woman with blood type AB (I A I B ) marries a man with blood type O (ii) The child has blood type AB (I A I B ). Is this man the child’s father?  Step Two: Cross the Squares iA iiB i iA iiB i iAiB i i

How to Tell…  A woman with blood type AB (I A I B ) marries a man with blood type O (ii). The child has blood type AB (I A I B ). Is this man the child’s father?  Step Three: Decode the Punnett Square iA I Type A iB I Type B iA i Type A iB I Type B iAiB i i

How to Tell…  A woman with blood type AB (I A I B ) marries a man with blood type O (ii). The child has blood type AB (I A I B ). Is this man the child’s father?  Step Four: Analyze! Could a type AB baby have come from the parents? (awkward) iA I Type A iB I Type B iA i Type A iB I Type B iAiB i i

You Try  A woman with blood type A or I A i marries a man with blood type B or I B i. They child has blood type O or ii. Is this man the child’s father? Draw a Punnett Square to justify your response.
