Leaders and Followers
2
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, and do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams 6 th U.S. President
3
Leadership is a two way street, loyalty up and loyalty down. Respect for one’s superiors and care for one’s crew. Grace Murray Hopper Rear Admiral and pioneer Computer scientist

Who is Douglas McGregor? Douglas McGregor was a psychologist that spent years in studying how leaders lead, how leaders treat people in their groups, and how others follow. In 1960, McGregor developed what is know as Theory Y and Theory X about human behavior. Today people still widely accept his Theory Y and Theory X. Turn to page 26 and read his Theory Y and Theory X. Now explain his theory to the person sitting beside you.
5
In Theory Y, leaders believe that people in their group are very capable, highly self- motivated, and require little directions – these group members are seen as “Y” people. In Theory X, leaders believe people in their group are not as capable or self- motivated, need a lot of structure, and prefer to be told what – these groups members are seen as “X people”

Watch the following clip – think about McGregor’s theories, decide if you see any Y group members or X group members. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP8Eede x_SM&feature=related

Ask yourself Now that you know more about human behavior and leadership, ask yourself: 1.How do you generally see yourself as a leader? How about as a follower? 2.How do you tend to see the people in your group when you are the leader? 3.What type of leader most motivates you when you’re a member of a group.
