Chapter 13 Lesson 1 Motion GLE: SWBAT Distinguish between speed and velocity 0707.11.3 Summarize the difference between the speed and velocity based on the distance and amount of time traveled.

What you will learn O Contrast distance and displacement O Define speed, velocity, and acceleration. O Calculate average speed

Motion I. What is Motion? Motion- walking, skating, jumping and dancing. A. Distance and Displacement 1. Motion of an object=how it changes it position 2. Two ways it does this: a. The entire path actually traveled (Distance) b. Distance and direction for only the start and stopping point (Displacement) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8hJhTE3bUk

Using the figure above: Calculate the distance traveled. Calculate the displacement. Let’s Practice Real World: What type of person would need to know the distance and displacement of an area other than a hiker?

Motion Cont. O B. Relative Motion O The position of an object is described relative to another object that hasn’t moved (reference point See Figure 2 TB p. 399 Reading Check: How can you tell whether an object has changed position? II. Speed = distance traveled divided by the time needed to travel that distance. Speed increases if it takes less time to travel the same distance.

Speed cont. A. Constant Speed O An object moving without change its speed is traveling at a constant speed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= b2qoJZIQRik B. Average Speed The speed of an object of an instant of time is the object’s instantaneous speed. O See fig. 3 O Avg. speed of the object – divide the distance (in meters) of object by the time (seconds) http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=y40aVo90ETE

Let’s Practice

III. Velocity Is how fast you are going and which direction. velocity= displacement time Think Pair Share Bicycle Velocity: A bicyclist is traveling west on a straight road. She wants to meet some friends 4.8 km farther along the road in 15 min. What velocity does she need to ride to get there on time? Why is it important to know: Pilots flying airplanes rely on control panels to know how fast and which direction they are going.

IV. Acceleration O It is when an object changes in speed, directions or both. O It is the change in velocity divided by the amount of time required for the change to occur. A. Speeding up & slowing down 1. Acceleration when an object speeds ups (increase in speed), object slows down (decrease in speed) and if it changes directions.

IV. Acceleration 2. Turning When an object urns or changes directions, its velocity changes – meaning its accelerating See Fig. 5
