Universal Gravitation Brought to you by: Ashley, Chelsey, and Jordan
2
How to calculate the speed of a satellite Speed of a satellite: The speed of a satellite orbiting Earth is equal the the square root of the universal gravitation orbit times the mass of Earth, divided by the radius of the orbit.
3
How to calculate the period of a satellite orbiting Earth The orbit of a satellite around Earth is similar to a planets orbit around the sun. The period for a satellite orbiting Earth is equal to 2pi times the square root of the radius of the orbit cubed, divided by the product of the universal gravitational constant and the mass of Earth.
4
Practice! Assume that a satellite orbits Earth 225km above its surface. Given that the mass of Earth in 5.97x10^24 kg and the radius of Earth is 6.38x10^6 m, what are the satellites orbital speed and period? Remember to use a tool box! What do you already know? What do you need to know?
5
Gravitational Field The gravitational field is equal to the universal content times the objects mass divided by the square of the distance from the objects center. The direction if toward the mass’s center.
6
Gravitational field The field of force an object has around it in space that extends out in all directions. Gravitational field is measured in newtons per kilogram (N/kg) The Earth and moon exert a pull on each other even though they are not in contact, they interact with each other's gravitational field.
7
Inertial Mass Inertial mass is found by exerting a known force to an objects unknown mass, measuring the acceleration, and applying Newton's Second Law, m = F/a. Inertial mass is equal to the net force on the object divided by the acceleration of the object.
8
Inertial Mass Inertial mass of an object is a measure of the objects resistance to any type of force. Just like __________ The more mass an object has, the (more/less) it is affected by any force. Therefore the (more/less) acceleration it undergoes. Inertial mass is mainly defined as ______
9
Gravitational Mass Mass as used in the law of universal gravitation determines the size of the gravitational force between two objects and is called ________ If you measure the force executed on an object by another object of mass at a distance then you can define it.
10
Gravitational Mass Gravitational mass is defined by the force of gravitation. That means that there is a gravitational force between two objects. Complete the equation - ---->
