German legacy in Romania

The Royal family The first king of Romania was Carol I, a member of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family. Carol I not only changed the mentality of Romania and its inhabitants, but also won its independence and adopted a modern constitution in 1966.

Even without knowing the language and despite being Catholic, Carol I remains until today one of the most respected figures in Romania’s history.

Ferdinand I Ferdinand I was Carol I’s grandson and the second king of Romania. His name was erased from the Hohenzollern Family for entering World War I on the side of the Triple Entente and not the Central Powers, thus honoring the promise he made in front of the Parliament.

German Beer in Romania The first German brewery in Romania opened in Azuga in the 19 th century. Romanian breweries have used it as an example ever since. Even today, German beer enjoys great popularity among Romanians.

German legacy in Transilvania However, the most spectacular German legacy in Romania is in Transilvania, where the Germans built several important towns during the middle ages, such as Brasov (Kronstadt), Sibiu(Hermanstadt) or Sighisoara(Schäßburg). A panoramic view of Sighisoara and the city’s coat of arms.

Ultimately, Germany left us two great kings, the knowledge to make beer, and of course, with some of our most beautiful cities.
