Infancy

Physical Developmental Milestones When a baby is born is very apparent that its fragile and can’t do much for themselves in matter of sitting up, or moving themselves for instance like crawling. According to American Academy of Pediatrics,(2009), “By the end of the first month, he’ll be much more alert and responsive. Gradually he’ll begin moving his body more smoothly and with much greater coordination-especially in getting his hand to his mouth” (as quoted in American Academy of pediatrics,2009, Para. 1). But as we move on to the 6 month age of infancy the baby can do a little bit more. A love of changes happen. But as we move on to the 6 month age of infancy there is more happening that was just not possible. In Berk (2013) discussed regarding the gross and fine-motor skills at this stage age four in a half months a baby should be able to turn their body over and back either in a crib or on the floor (p.148). At this age you must me very careful when lying a baby down, your baby could possible roll off the bed or the couch. At this stage a infant is constantly exploring with different objects like chew toys their fingers and hands.

Cognitive Developmental Milestones. Milestone at 1 year old This is age of learning and figuring out many different things for instance their like or dislikes. There is so much going on at this age the baby is processing so much information and developing schemas. Learning new foods, people, starting to develop words. CDC (2014) noted that children that are in infancy will most likely be able to “find hidden things easily, copy gestures, explores things in different ways like shaking-banging-throwing”. Berk (2013) noted that “Deferred imitation of everyday behaviors in make-believe play”(p.238). This is when your infant is able to copy things he or she has learned. When a infant can recall what he or she has learned.

Language Developmental Milestones Language developmental milestones during the infant stages are very huge, and require a lot of parent and caregiver interaction so that the infant can learn as much as they can to move on to the next stage of development the toddler years. You should see your infants beginning stages of language development, they will start to say words you probably have used in front of them along with certain gestures like using your hands. Berk (2013) noted infants milestones are “Begins to comprehend words, and recognizes familiar words.Uses communicative gestures”(p. 395). A lot of the times infants will point and make sounds that sound like words when they want something. They will eventually say what they want in regards to what they want to eat or what they want to do for instance if they want to play with something or have you give them something.

Atypical sign of Development Atypical sings of development are very apparent at this age of life. Your pediatrician should have already explained to you what milestones your child should be reaching at the infancy stage. Kelly Stanton (2009) noted that if your child is showing signs of atypical development at the ages between 1 year old to right before the age of two “ Does not crawl, stand or walk, lacks interest in exploring the environment through movement, uses on hand or leg much more than the other”. Atypical signs could be a sign of developmental delays or sometimes babies take awhile to progress onto the next stage of developmental milestones. The best thing to do is to make an appointment with your doctor to see if your child is showing sings of Atypical of development, just to be on the safe side.

Strategy that families can use in their child’s learning You can read to your child, watch videos, or sing songs that consist of the basics for instance the alphabet and colors. At the same time you can mimic or echo what is being taught. According to Johnson (2014) noted that you can “Take a cue from Sesame Street. Dedicate each week to a letter of the alphabet. For instance, read books that start with A, eat A foods, cut up snacks into that shape, and write the letter on your sidewalk with chalk”. There are many things you can try to do, that will most likely be successful with.
