Thursday, April 21, 2011 Good morning, English 11! Good morning! Please clear off your desks, except for your book, character log, critical lenses sheet (blue), and the 3-column chart on Mary Anne.

Guest Speaker I think it would be really nice if you wrote thank you cards to Mr. Olson. I know as a former teacher that his hope is that he left you with something worth remembering. Would you be willing to write a short note to him thanking him and sharing something you’ll remember? I know he’d be surprised and would really enjoy them.

The Things They Carried What lens is this? What had happened between them, Rat said, nobody ever knew for sure. But in the mess hall that evening it was clear that an accommodation had been reached. Or more likely, he said, it was a case of setting down some new rules. Mary Anne’s hair was freshly shampooed. She wore a white blouse, a navy blue skirt, a pair of plain black flats. Over dinner she kept her eyes down… - p. 103

The Things They Carried What is O’Brien getting at with these quotations? …the way she looked, Mary Anne made you think about those girls back home, how clean and innocent they all are… – p. 113 What happened to her, Rat said, was what happened to all of them. You come over clean and you get dirty and then afterward it’s never the same. – p. 114

The Things They Carried What is Rat Kiley’s reputation among the men? Why is he the right one to tell the story of Mary Anne? How is Mary Anne the typical teenager when she arrives? What early clues are we given that Mary Anne has begun to change?

The Things They Carried When she returns from her night patrol with the Greenies, what do the men notice about her relationship with Mark Fossie? Rat compares Mary Anne to an animal and notes that she is now a member of the zoo. How is that comparison appropriate for the Vietnam experience? How are soldiers like animals?

The Things They Carried Remember to complete this 3-COLUMN LIST. Write passages that describe Mary Anne “before” and “after”. Mary AnneBEFOREAFTER Clothing Personality Relationship w/Fossie Hygiene Eyes(p. 96)(p. 106) Hand these in, please.

The Things They Carried For Chapters 10 & 11 – “Stockings” and “Church”, What do they have in common? Why did O’Brien place them next to each other in the novel?

The Things They Carried There is a video called A Soldier’s Sweetheart that tells the story of Mary Anne. There are differences from the novel. I want you to keep track of things that are different, ok? Heads down = no movie
