Social Studies Second Grade The purpose of this PowerPoint is to educate about the Hispanic and African American cultures that are represented in the United States of America. The student will be able to discuss different cultures around the US when given different example to elaborate on with 100% accuracy. State Standard: 2.1 Compare the beliefs, customs, ceremonies, and traditions of the varied cultures represented in the United States by researching informational texts

Definition of Culture in regards to America

African-American Culture in America
Food- “Soul Food” or a term associated with African American cuisine shows how of inexpensive products procured through farming or hunting can be given a creative edge and turned to a delight of the taste-buds. Gospel music originated from this culture As a whole many identify as Christian with deep roots in the church

Game Time To learn more about important people that helped shape both the history and culture of African-American people we are now going to play a quick game ! After playing this game we have now learned different people who helped influence the culture that we are learning about today.

Review Get into groups of 3 One person will be the reporter
One person will be the cultural representative One person will narrate the activity

Assignment The reporter will interview the cultural representative. Both students will have a conversation that gives insight into that culture, ie the two could discuss Kwanza and how they celebrate etc. The narrator will set the stage by introducing the reporter and the representative and tell which culture they are talking about !

Wrap-Up Today we learned some basics about two cultures. We learned about the Hispanic culture and African-American culture in America. Remember just because someone’s culture is different from yours does not make it less important. Take time to learn about different cultures from yours! Remember the definitions of culture that we talked about and think about how that relates to your own culture !
