6. A big part of our culture is story telling Nana loves to tell us stories in Spanish and broken English about how she worked in the crop fields growing up and factories. She learned what it meant to be hard working. Stories how she learned English on her own, without being able to go to school. She tells how she expects her children and family to be hard working citizens, and for them to get an education. She tells about how our family has come to be in the United States, looking for work, education and safety. She tells how she raised eight children in a very small, three bedroom home and made sure they had everything she never had.

Empanadas- breads or pastries made with fruits, pumpkin, or sometimes meats Tortillas- corn and flour- usually home made Spanish Rice- tomato sauce, garlic salt. pepper and white rice Red Chili Tamales - shredded roast beef, red chilies, garlic salt, pepper, masa Refried beans with cheese Fideo or Conchitas- little straight or shells noodles- fried then boiled in tomato sauce and water with garlic salt and pepper Carne asada- seasoned meat, thin steaks with garlic salt, peppers
