Glossary Denomination- Organised subgroup of the Christian Church Multiculturalism- Policy that recognises cultural diversity within an overall structure Meditation- Practice of emptying the mind to think or reflect on an aspect of God or Religious belief Reincarnation- Concept of rebirth in the physical form New Age Movement- Promotes and develops individual spirituality rather than institutionalised religion- yoga, practitioners, astrologers.

Introduction of Multiculturalism post Vietnam War Muslims- Early Turkish Migrants worked in Rural Aus, by 1986, 50k Turkish Muslims Heavy influx of Lebanese migrants (Christian/Muslim) post Civil War 1975 onwards

Hinduism in Aus Arrived Pre 1901 as traders, labourers- Sugar Cane fields in QLD Population decreased in 1901 (WAP) 1947- 2189 People classified as Hindoos. Number steadily increased- India, Sri Lanka, Fiji Professionals/Skilled labourers- Escaping strict restrictions and Civil War Appx half now live in Sydney Hindu Practices- Yoga, Meditation, Understanding of Reincarnation and Karma: Modern Society 0.5% population increase between 2001 and 2006 (0.7%)

Buddhism in Aus Earliest- Chinese part of 1850 gold rush Immigration Res Act 1901 discouraged more coming Buddhists did have high support- Alfred Deakin (2 nd PM) part of theosophical Society: utilised Buddhist teachings Leo Berkely- Keen Advocate of Buddhism- Formed society in 1947

New Age Spirituality 1980s Visits by Dalai Lama, Free Tibet Moement, Building of Temples galvanised Buddhism SE Asian migrants 2.1% of Aus pop, second largest tradition after Christianity

Continued struggles in Aus- Cronulla Race Riots, distinctive dress of women, Terrorism
